The average life of a car battery has increased to around 3.5-4 years under normal operating conditions, however, a battery’s life can be reduced by factors including storage, vibration, temperature, overcharging and cycling.

Extremes in weather, both hot and cold, can affect the life of your car battery. In winter your battery is more prone to failure as the colder temperatures overnight will cause the materials in the battery to contract, and then when in use, the battery will return to a nominal operating temperature which will cause the material to expand again. This constant contraction and expansion of the battery materials will weaken the structural integrity of the lead plates.

In hotter temperatures, your car battery requires a higher charge rate which can lead to an accelerated loss of active material from the positive lead plates, increased grid corrosion and water loss.

Dual Battery Systems

Need to power appliances such as fridges in your 4WD, motorhome, caravan or camper trailer without affecting your battery?

Adding a secondary battery is by far the most effective way to produce power for a fridge or other appliances and can be done simply without huge associated costs. This will enable you to maintain the start battery as it is isolated from the deep power draw associated with appliances. The best suited battery for this system is a deep cycle battery.

The secondary bank of batteries (deep cycle) can be charged while your engine is running with the dual system controlling the distribution of charge.

Car Audio & Hands-Free

Although factory car audio has come a long way in recent years we still find many customers looking to upgrade their head units to incorporate MP3, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity.

Current legislation requires all Mobile Phone conversations effectively to be connected via a hands-free kit as touching your phone whilst driving is now illegal.

Smartfix Auto Electrics are experts at finding you the right solution for you. Call us for a chat and we will see how we can satisfy your needs.

Reversing Cameras

If you’re a mum or a dad, you’ve probably convinced your kids you really do have eyes in the back of your head. If only it were true! A reversing camera acts as a set of eyes in the back of your car – helping you avoid parking dings, or worse.

We’ve all heard of accidents where the driver hasn’t seen something in their rear view when reversing. Best case scenario, it’s a bag of shopping; nightmare scenario, it’s a pet or a child. A few hundred dollars spent on a reversing camera could save a life.

If you don’t have eyes in the back of your head, reversing cameras are a must on large 4 wheel drives and work vehicles with poor rear vision. Don’t wait until you bump your vehicle before you consider a reversing camera.

LED Lights

The old and faithful incandescent light bulbs are being forced out of automotive lighting, to be replaced by LED lights. LEDs have a number of advantages over incandescent lighting that are very attractive for automotive use:

  • They are very insensitive to vibrations
  • They last for the life of the vehicle (does not apply to headlight LEDs yet)
  • They can be baked into moisture proof casings to be installed in all kinds of harsh environments
  • They light up much quicker than incandescent bulbs
  • They are extremely compact
  • They can be made to emit different colors
  • They run cool
  • They give more light per supplied watt than incandescent light bulbs

There is now LED lighting technology available for every conventional automotive lighting purpose. The LEDs are also creating new light features for automotive purposes, as the LEDs can be installed in ways and in locations that are impossible with incandescent and fluorescent lighting.

Electric Braking Systems

According to the Australian Design Rules, all trailers over 750kgs GTM (irrespective of the towing capacity or unladen mass of the tow vehicle) must have an effective brake system fitted. All brakes must be operable from the driver’s seat of the tow vehicle except for over-ride brakes.

Electric Braking Systems improve the safety of vehicles towing trailers and caravans . To effectively operate the electric brakes a control unit must be installed into the towing vehicle & wired to the trailer connection at the rear of the car. It is the job of the control unit to send an appropriate level of current to the magnets in the brake assembles to provide smooth positive braking. A wide range of electric brake control units are available on the market & particular attention should be given to you choice, as the controller is the key to a smooth performing brake system.
